Kate Gallego, a Democrat, won the 2019 nonpartisan mayoral election in Phoenix, defeating Daniel Valenzuela with 58.6% of the votes. She became the first woman elected as mayor in over 30 years, the second female mayor in Phoenix history, and one of the youngest big city mayors in the U.S. Gallego had support from progressives, labor unions, and liberal advocacy organizations like Emily’s List, Sierra Club, and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona. She assumed office on March 21, 2019.
Kate Gallego ran for re-election in 2020 and won with the highest number of votes ever in a mayoral election, getting 60.7%. Her closest opponent, Merissa Hamilton, a Libertarian write-in candidate, received 26.29% of the votes.
